Book Discussion - Leah on the Offbeat #4

Hello Nail-Biters!! Two more topics of discussion for you!

7. This book focuses a lot on Love vs. Friendship. Leah's love for Abby led to strainuous friendships with Nick and Morgan, and affected her remaining friendships as well. What is your take on Love vs. Friendship?
8. If you could hear this same story from another person’s point of view, who would you choose?

  1. 7) In this point, the piority for me is not hurting people I care about. So, when Leah went ahead and acted on her feelings for Abby, completely disregarding her friendship with Nick and how hurt he was, it pissed me off to a great degree.
Not only it is part of the "bro/girl-code" that you should never date your friends' exes, specially when they just broke up (and Leah was making moves even before that), it is basic decency in order not to hurt your best friend (which supposedly Nick was), whose heart is already destroyed.
And this is just on Nick, but I think Leah neglected all her friends in the name of love.

    8) It wouldn't be an YA, but I'm actually very curious about Leah's mother and I kind of wanted a PoV of her.

Both love and friendship are important and they shouldn't be in conflict with each other. However, Leah was put in tough situations and reacted impulsively rather than thoughtfully.

Everything could've been solved with compassion, and yet Leah seemed to go with the worst way of going about it: alienating one of her best friends (Morgan) and lying and betraying another (Nick).

And I think the author made it very clear love was the most important to her by having Leah hurt her friends and break her friendships "for love" and by not fleshing out either Morgan or Nick (or Leah's relationship with them) and using them as tools for plot and obstacles to overcome.

"8. If you could hear this same story from another person’s point of view, who would you choose?"

Probably Abby. I feel like I didn't get a chance to really know her. Her character was very much narrowed to her sexual orientation (or her discovery of it), her having to deal with racism and her being super pretty. I feel like I never got to know her as a real person and I'd be interested to know her.

    1. Yes, completely agree, Abby was way underdeveloped, we never even got to know her passions or interests.

  3. 7) I didn’t like Leah’s character in general so I may be a bit biased. She saw her best friend suffer a lot and didn’t seem to really care. I think she ended up being really present to Abby (ran after her every time she was sad) but she never really supported Nick, in my opinion.
I understand she liked Abby before and it’s amazing that Abby liked her too. But, in their place, I would have hidden the relationship as to respect Nick, who was a mess. (Yes, I understand he ended up liking Taylor but I hated that ending so let me ignore it).
Also Nick always asked her about how Abby was doing, in the hope they would get back together and I feel like Leah should’ve ended that hope more clearly.
About Morgan, I wouldn’t be friends with a racist either but I think in this situation it is easy to understand Morgan was feeling rejected and hurt and she didn’t mean it. Leah really did make a big deal about it.

    8) I think it would be really interesting to hear Abby’s side so we also understand what she really felt for Nick before and after breaking up with him.

    1. Yes, and we're not even mentioning Garrett! The aitjaumade a big deal of love being greater than friendship and then let Leah lead on Garrett, who was very much infatuated. A lot of these situations could have been avoided if Leah was straightforward with her friends.
